Mercedes-Benz EQC

Overview

A growing number of carmakers offer electrified transportation, and Mercedes-Benz enters the fray with the 2021 EQC. The EQC is a compact SUV that seats five, and it shares much of its body structure with the gas-powered GLC-class. Its fully electric powertrain delivers quiet performance, along with the crisp acceleration that's part of the package with many luxury EVs. Its cabin looks appropriately deluxe, with high-gloss plastics, attractive textiles, and modern design. Though final EPA figures haven't been announced, early estimates place this SUV's driving range at around 200 miles, which is shorter than that of its Tesla-badged competition. Overall, the EQC's blend of Mercedes-Benz opulence and eco-friendly electrification make it an attractive pick for green-minded luxury-SUV buyers.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The EQC pairs two electric motors with a lithium-ion battery. A one-speed direct-drive transmission sends power to all four wheels. This powertrain provides a total output of 402 horsepower and 561 lb-ft of torque. We haven't tested the EQC, but Mercedes-Benz estimates that it will make the sprint from zero to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. That puts it behind its key rival in this segment, the Tesla Model X. Tesla claims a zero-to-60-mph time of 4.4 seconds for the Long Range model and 2.7 seconds for the high-performance variant with Ludicrous mode engaged. As is the case with many vehicles that bear the Mercedes-Benz badge, the EQC does a masterful job of balancing athleticism with comfort. It delivers a smooth ride on rough road surfaces. At the same time, its handling is sharp enough to make things entertaining on daily commutes

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The EPA hasn't announced its estimates regarding the EQC's driving range, but we expect this figure to land at 200 miles or less. That puts it well behind the Tesla Model X, which can travel for more than 300 miles on a single charge. When charging at home, Mercedes claims that the EQC recharges from 10 percent to 100 percent in 10 hours. With the standard DC fast-charger in use, going from a 10-percent charge to an 80-percent charge takes 40 minutes.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Mercedes-Benz hasn't released mileage estimates for the EQC. We're expecting these figures to come in at around 80/70 MPGe city/highway

Infotainment and Connectivity

As you'd expect, the EQC comes with an up-to-date selection of tech features. SiriusXM satellite radio and a Burmester sound system are standard. The cabin is home to two 10.25-inch screens; there is one for the instrument cluster, and one for the infotainment system. Combined, they help give the cabin a contemporary look. The infotainment system is governed by a touchpad that replaces the central control knob seen in older versions of this technology. We're not fans of the touchpad due to how difficult it is to accurately input your commands. Fortunately, the EQC offers redundant touchscreen capability.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz EQC hasn't received an overall crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). However, Mercedes-Benz has equipped this SUV with driver-assistance technology that can help prevent accidents from occurring. Key safety features include:

  •  Available blind-spot monitoring
  •  Available lane-keeping assistance
  •  Available adaptive cruise control

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Mercedes-Benz offers a reasonably competitive warranty. Still, you'll get longer coverage from Jaguar.

  •  Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  •  Powertrain warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  •  Hybrid components are covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles
  •  No complimentary scheduled maintenance
